031310 1039 SurvivorHer1 Survivor Heroes vs. Villains Cirie Fields: Exclusive Exit InterviewNo, Cirie was not voted out a second time on last week’s Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains. This one got hung up at the post office and had to be rerouted to our BuddyTV offices. Look for our interview with last night’s victim (err… boot) Tom Westman coming up soon.

In the meantime, allow me to take you back to last week’s episode when JT switched his vote to join Tom and Colby in voting out Cirie. As Tom said at the time, Cirie has a knack for wrapping weak-minded players around her finger, much like Amanda twirls bubblegum and locks of her hair.

Much like Parvati, Cirie “doesn’t ride coattails, baby.” People ride her coattails. They just don’t always know it. To my mind, she’s a Female Survivor Player, First Class, because she plays the game very aggressively using soft skills. A little wink, a laugh, a compliment, and pretty soon she’s telling people how to vote.

Before this season taped, Cirie said that she wanted to play as many times as she had to until she won. You could almost picture her as an older woman, still trying to make up for that awful Final Two mixup in Micronesia. But sadly, after this season we may have seen the last of Cirie. Just ask her.

I know you’ve talked about playing until you win. But has your legendary reputation doomed you to always be treated with caution and distrust by future contestants?

Definitely a concern of mine. Right now I feel I’m done, but two years from now it may be a different story.

The first time we saw you in Panama you were scared of leaves. Would it be fair to say that you’ve grown and learned a lot over three seasons?

I’ve definitely learned a lot, from how to survive outdoors, to just how others percieve me, and lastly, how to maintan your sanity whilst living on an island with a group of insane people!

You’ve played with James twice now. From a viewers’ perspective he seems like a very different person now. Could you offer us any insight into how and why he’s changed?

I don’t think he’s changed. I just think the viewers were just [now] exposed to another aspect of James’ personality that they have never had the pleasure of seeing!

Was Parvati on board with you, James and Amanda?

I hadn’t spoke with Parv since Micronesia, so I had no plan to include Parv in our alliance!

Why didn’t Rupert’s name ever come up as a target in light of his broken toe (and ego)?

Rupert was initially highly regarded by JT, who most of the time was running my alliance. Therefore, I would never bring up Rupert’s name.

You’ve got be considered one of the best players of all time, but specifically one of the best females. Who else would you put in that category?

Well, thank you for including me on the list of the all time best! That being said, my list would include Stephanie Lagrossa, Parv, Eliza Orlins… I’ll stop there, because I could go on and on!

031210 1014 SurvivorHer1 Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains Knights of the Round Table Recap

In the image above, it looks like James is surrounded by a bunch of schoolyard bullies on ‘Survivor.’ Well, he is surrounded, but things aren’t always as they appear to be. The same can be said for the strategies of some of these all-so-great returning players, too. While some strategies remain consistent (a snake oil salesman isn’t going to turn into the Avon lady), others are baffling me this season.

Another dark night for the heroes

Oh, they’re just playing this game so badly. Once again the villains won both reward and immunity. It’s all because, not only do the heroes suck at puzzles and almost everything else, they’re all into their little alliances rather than a team goal to the merge. I don’t even recall what splintered the tribe which worked so well together setting up a shelter. Last week, they made a decent decision in voting out Cirie. She wasn’t a powerhouse in challenges and she was indeed a sitting manipulator.

This week, I’m not so sure they made the right decision. With James going down in the reward challenge, messing his knee up bad enough to wear an immobilizer, it’s uncertain how well he’s going to do in challenges or whether he’ll even make it through the game. Tom, on the other hand, is in good physical shape. Amanda, once a target, is decent in challenges. Rupert is only good as brute caveman roaring strength — don’t ask him to think. Colby is good at both physical and mental challenges (well, as good as the heroes get mentally). Candice is probably the weakest right now, other than James in his current condition.

An odd knight for the villains
The villains have their own little alliances. However, since they’ve won four out of the five immunity challenges, their in-fighting isn’t having the same effect on their tribe. On the surface it looks like Boston Rob and everybody against Evil Russell. But that’s not quite the case. Russell not only has Pavarti under his wing, but he also found the hidden immunity idol. We could have bet on that find, eh?

Pavarti and Russell are going to be a dangerous duo to reckon with down the line. Both are manipulators and schemers, plus they both tend to give challenges 100%. What do they need to add to their strength? Why, I believe they need a loyal doofus! And, then there’s Coach! Russell first showed Pavarti the hidden idol, strengthening his alliance with her. Then he knighted Coach in his mission — “the King and the Dragonslayer.” Yes, I gagged. Doofus Coach was so beholden with the trust put in him that he would follow Russell if he had to fly into the sun. This should be interesting if they ever go to tribal council again!

What the heck is with JT?
JT was such an honored, honest, and dedicated player in his own season. It worked for him. He won a million dollars. This season, he’s trying to play a schemer’s game and the suit does not fit at all. He’s already betrayed alliances. He’s made alliances with just about everyone. No one can trust him. The only reason he hasn’t got a target on him is that he’s still a likable enough guy and he’s the best they have in challenges. If he makes it anywhere near the end, he might lose the final vote due to all of his wishy-washy flip-flopping ways.

The challenge retreads
I’m enjoying the actual retreads of previous challenges this season. In each one, someone on each tribe has already done the challenge. It’s much better than challenges which are almost the same but not quite which we’ve seen a lot of in recent seasons. Tonight’s reward challenge was the fight for the football thrown into the basketball hoop which was even more brutal than when we last saw it. James wrecked his knee, but Jerri’s got to be hurting too as Rupert rammed her face into a post. The immunity challenge had the blindfolded tribemates being shouted directions to gather heavy puzzle pieces. James, with his knee immobilized, did pretty well shouting until he got hoarse.

The tribe has spoken
I’m to the point where if the heroes lose it all, I have to say they deserve to lose. Tonight only Tom and Colby voted for James (because of the bad knee and possibly personal reasons). JT flipped again and voted with the rest to get rid of Tom, an asset to the tribe. They probably should have voted out Candice, I think.

In the season’s first shocker, Cirie Fields was given the boot from Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains this week.

We analyzed J.T.’s side switch in the first edition of the Survivor Round Table, and now we’re here to give readers even more insight into the elimination, courtesy of Cirie herself. She gave Entertainment Weekly an exit interview…

On Jeff’s Tribal Council speech: I can’t say Jeff ever goes too far. This is what he does. This is why I love watching Survivor. Whether or not it ended up influencing people one way or another, we’ll never know. But I don’t think he went too far. You have to counteract what he’s saying, and if you can, you can, and if you can’t, you can’t.

030810 0939 CirieFields1 Cirie Fields on Survivor Elimination: I Never Trusted J.T.

On J.T.’s switch: I felt like Rupert, Amanda, and James were pretty much going to stick to the plan, but you never know. I couldn’t tell. I knew Tom was talking to J.T. a lot and I never trusted J.T. I always said to Amanda, “Are you sure about J.T.?” because I could see J.T. playing. It was hard for me to figure out which one flipped, but I wasn’t really that surprised.

On her closest ally: I really didn’t have one. I was trying to make it Candice, but it was a work in progress. Candice is like a nervous Nellie, so I constantly had to reassure her. I never really had a close ally out there and that’s a problem. You can’t play the game of Survivor alone, and if everyone is threatened by you – even the people in your own alliance – it puts you in a bad spot.

Parvati Shallow may be the best Survivor
player of all time. Don’t insult her by suggesting that she’s just succesful because she bats her eyelashes or wiggles her hips. Even prettier girls than Parvati have played that strategy and gotten voted off early on.

030210 0931 SurvivorHer1 Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains: No More Marquess of Queensbury Rules

Coach came much closer when he said that Parvati makes people light up when she talks to them. We often talk about “chemistry” as though it could easily exist between any two people. But Parvati would have free and easy chemistry with a lamp post.

Fans may call Russell a troll, but she obviously makes him feel like Robert Pattinson.  Fans were probably gagging watching her roll all over him and giggle. But feeding Russell’s ego is the best way to control him. In my observation, girls like Amanda are just as loyal to Parvati as the guys are because she knows how to make them feel special too. Everyone is special to Parvati!

Except possibly Jerri, that “bitter old cougar” “Fakee McGee” who wants to punch her in the face. And Coach, who has never been manipulated by a flirtatious player.  The two of them have truly become Survivor’s new defenders of justice. Coach’s Martin Luther King decleration was worthy of Friday Night Light’s Coach Taylor.

I will be fascinated to see whether the Queen can really control her competitive honeybees deep into this season, or whether cooler heads will eventually prevail. They need to get rid of Parvati now.

Over on the other tribe, James was still rubbing a lot of people the wrong way. Shoulder blocking Randy into the swamp was fine. Looking down at Randy lying in the mud and slamming the pillow in his face was not.  Tom is right: Between the broken toe and the dislocated shoulder, The Marquess of Queensbury Rules seem to be going out the window this season.

For anyone wondering, the Marquess of Queensbury Rules are a code of boxing conduct endorsed by a 17th century Scottish nobleman and still used today. If it weren’t for the 9th Marquess of Queensbury Mike Tyson could hit guys bellow the belt, and, well, that would end the match pretty fast. That’s pretty much how James has competed so far this season.

In other news, what the heck is up with the chickens in Samoa? Tom is apparently a chick magnet. Give the guy some flour to make biscuits and I think he could open a Popeyes franchise in Samoa.

Meanwhile, Candice may still be running around trying to convince people she didn’t say that she didn’t trust Cirie (and in case you missed it, what she actually said was that you could trust Cirie as long as she felt safe.)  Candice is a shrude customer. I don’t blame JT for being scared of her.

Will next week by Russell’s Waterloo?

022610 1344 SurvivorHer1 Survivor: Heroes vs Villains Recap: Playing Dirty, Featuring ParvatiLast week on Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, the Heroes continued their fall from grace, after a particularly nasty Tribal Council sent Stephenie packing. While all that happens, the Villains find their footing. This week, a lesson for me: don’t be very certain, because things have been flipped over. Again.

Heroes rising: If we’re to believe Tom, the last vote was cathartic for the tribe, but he isn’t hopeful that it would change things. Consider this: James just wants to win. JT just wants to stay on top of the game–his explanation for voting Steph out. Colby is frustrated that nobody’s playing fair anymore. The aim: to make it as pleasant as possible at camp.

I think the Heroes still want to make this set-up work. Rupert acts like a camp leader this time: he wants it to rain so everyone will huddle in their shelter and they’ll have “empowerment activities”. It doesn’t rain, but nature cooperates anyway: they found another bunch of chickens, and they catch them all. “It’s a neat experience,” he said, “and that’s what we need.”

Well, not really. JT is still at it, trying to break Candice and Cirie apart by telling one that the other doesn’t trust her. “My lying ability is better than it should be,” he says, because he doesn’t really lie outside the show. The two girls sense something is up, but don’t find anything yet.

Villains, well, not rising: They may have another night in camp, but Rob’s already thinking of strategy. “I don’t trust Russell,” he says. “He’s running around with puppy dog eyes at Parvati.” That thought is a bit disturbing, but it makes sense, because they’re sleeping beside each other, laughing.

The following morning, Coach and Rob approach Russell. The bottom line, in the Dragon Slayer’s words: his alliance is no strategy, but is “puppy love”. Russell won’t take Coach seriously, but feels a little threatened by Rob.

And so, let us give a big welcome to classic Russell. In an attempt to assert his supremacy over Coach and Rob, he’ll burying the camp’s only machete in the sand. (He even wanted to toss Rob’s cap into the fire, a throwback to Jaison’s socks.) That gives Randy a hard time the following morning, as he tries to open a huge clam that not everybody wants to eat.

A dirty sweep: This week’s challenge is a throwback to Palau: it’s pretty much sumo wrestling with castaways holding bags and pushing their opponents into the mud. Apart from immunity, the winning tribe gets coffee, sugar, a week’s worth of rice and luxury items–pretty much items they brought with them to remind them of home.

And man, wasn’t this an absolute doozy: the Heroes win all eight match-ups. Some were effortless: Tom just pushed Russell, JT dominated Tyson, and James screwed an old man in Randy by literally nudging him. Rupert had a harder time overcoming Coach: he actually fell in the mud, but it didn’t count because Coach used his arms when he shouldn’t. Still, a huge win for the Heroes–a really huge win. Me, I’m surprised nobody went for Rupert’s toe.

Parvati’s charm offensive: “They must’ve all eaten steroid sandwiches before the challenge,” Tyson said afterwards. “I worried for their sanity.” Now we’re past that, it’s time for a frenzy.

Coach and Randy are aiming for Parvati: she’s a dangerous player, they say, partly because she’s got three friends over at the Heroes side, and partly because she’s flirting with everybody else–exactly what you’d expect from her, right? But Randy is on the chopping block, too. It’s automatic, he says, but he won’t be scrambling for votes.

Parvati’s the one scrambling, though. After unsuccessfully hitting on Coach (”I have been coaching college soccer for girls for years,” he said) she corners Jerri, who supposedly hasn’t made a choice. More or less, nobody knew who they were voting for–Sandra just wanted to go with the majority–except for Randy and Parvati.

Message sent? Coach is the star of tonight’s Tribal Council. He left camp quoting Martin Luther King and vowing to defend Randy to the end “for honor”. He got to strut his stuff against Sandra–who, perhaps unintentionally, implied that Coach isn’t doing anything at camp–by calling her words “a bunch of bulls–.” And then, it becomes a conversation about who has the worst shelter in Survivor history. Coach says it’s the Villains camp. Jerri and Courtney beg to disagree.

But Parvati’s tactic actually worked. In the end, nobody voted for her: the tribe unanimously voted for Randy. Knowing that he’s going anyway, he decided to “send a message” by voting for someone else entirely: Rob. “I’m not sure if they got the message,” he later said to the cameras. He left his buff in the fire.

Next week: the hidden immunity idol enters the game, as Russell gets another target on his back. And Coach melts down. I never thought I’d see this coming.

‘Survivor: Heroes vs Villains’: A Role Reversal

    Posted by: | Comments (0)

022010 0900 SurvivorHer1 Survivor: Heroes vs Villains: A Role ReversalWelcome to Survivor: Heroes vs Villains, also known as a case study in world affairs.

Imagine two countries. Two perfectly healthy democratic countries. One portrays themselves as the good guys, and for a while it does go that way. Everybody’s feeling good about each other, everybody’s working, everybody’s got a common interest. The other is quite proud of being devious, and it starts pretty much the same way as the first, only they can’t agree and are close to self-destruction.

The first country–let’s call it, umm, Heroes–suddenly suffers a huge defeat, one that forces them to reassess their priorities. After determining those responsible, and enforcing justice, they continue working, believing that a cleaner operation is a better operation.

The second country–yes, it’s Villains, in case you already figured out the metaphor–score huge victories, affirming their place in the world, but they still continue fighting. But those victories were firmly planted in their heads, and it sticks with them in everything they do.

The Heroes suffer another defeat, and its citizens are becoming restless. “It’s not enough that we punish one person. Let’s punish everyone!” And so everybody starts fighting, and all of a sudden, they’re on the path to self-destruction. Their democracy is a shambles.

The Villains? They get their act together–helped, perhaps, by a national emergency, spurring everyone to action. Sure, their leadership gradually became a self-proclaimed “benevolent dictator”, but it works. Common goals are realized, and they’re reaping the benefits of their huge victories.

Yes, that was a political metaphor. I did not mean to comment on anything else but Survivor.

It’s funny how the premise of the show–Heroes vs Villains–are defining what each castaway does. The Heroes believe they’re good people, so they naturally feel betrayed when one of them starts acting differently. “But you’re supposed to be good! We’re supposed to be good!” They should’ve expected everyone to work behind their backs (it is Survivor after all) but they didn’t, and now, when all these motives are discovered, things have gotten pretty nasty.

The Villains, on the other hand, are proud of their bad guy status. Well, mostly proud–Rob tried to be the good guy but it didn’t really work for him, so when he started laying the law, things got better. Nobody was worrying about who they are: they’re just playing their part. Now, they’re whipping the heroes’ asses. This is a role reversal!

Sure, the Villains will start fighting each other when they lose immunity. The work of folks like Sandra and Russell will be uncovered, much like the work of Tom and JT were uncovered last night. The difference is, all this happened to the Heroes early in the game, and in the long run, it’s going to leave them weak. Imagine the Villains going against two smaller “tribes”? That’s easy.

It takes discontent to foster a war, and so far, it’s happening to the people I least expect it to happen. But it makes for interesting viewing.

021910 0750 SurvivorHer1 Survivor: Heroes vs Villains Recap: Robs Vulnerable, But the Heroes, More SoThe Heroes weren’t lucky on Survivor: Heroes vs Villains last week: despite the confidence that comes with being the good guys, they broke down during the immunity challenge. Voting Sugar out seemed necessary, since she performed poorly and could prove to be a thorn on their side in the future. This week, they have to get back into swing and survive another day. It should be an easy task, right? I mean, they’re still high with the “we’re the good team” sort of euphoria.

A blow to the “buffoon tribe”: The Villains, on the other hand, are not having a good time. Sure, they trumped the Heroes last week, but they still can’t meet halfway when it comes to making a fire and building a shelter. It’s been a rainy night, and the following morning they’re rebuilding their beds. Rob takes charge, but gets frustrated since everybody wants to have a say in things. Cue Courtney’s foreshadowing: “I hope he doesn’t drop dead in the next few days or we’ll all die.”

Rob, obviously very fatigued, walks away from the hoopla. Jerri follows him, sensing that something is wrong–and there is: he falls unconscious. Interesting he looks like he’s just sleeping, but he did complain of headaches, and he did say he was unconscious. Anyway, he asks for help, and the medics come in and say he’s just got the flu. Rob, apologetic, tells Jeff that he loves the game too much. An epiphany: “I should stop trying to be the good guy. Just do what everybody wants you to do.”

Another breakdown: That realization came in at just the right time for the Villains. Their challenge this week is straight from Tocantins: they have to roll six heavy crates to their platform, and create a staircase out of it that spells their tribe’s name. Taking a lesson from the last challenge, the Heroes agreed to listen to JT, since he’s done it before. They took an early lead, but like last time, it all melted away when they got to the very end.

This time around, though, the game was pretty tight, especially with the staircases. The Heroes broke down when they lost track of their puzzle: everybody started shouting as their listen-to-JT game plan crumbled. The Villains were doing that very plan, with Rob taking charge–he did promise to return to his dictator roots rather than be a diplomat–and they won immunity, and much needed shelter construction supplies.

A target on Stephenie’s back: Actually, the Heroes started fighting before the challenge. Rupert thinks Stephenie is a threat to him and should go. Stephenie thinks Rupert is annoying, and he’s overdoing the “good guy” game too early.

But it gets worse after the challenge. James is especially frustrated at Stephenie, because she’s disagreeing with everyone during the challenge. “One voice” was his mantra for the rest of the day. He’d say that repeatedly–after the challenge, back at camp… it does get annoying for a while, but you do see his point. He thinks she’s the reason why their tribe lost two challenges in a row: in her previous season, after all, her tribe lost every immunity challenge until she was the only remaining person.

Swinging the swing vote: Now Tom’s afraid of losing the chance to gain control of his tribe. With JT fluttering around (”now I don’t know where to go”) he figures he wants to keep his alliance with Colby and Steph intact, and the only way is to ask Candice and Cirie into the fold. They want to vote Amanda off again, since she’s the weakest contestant.

The two girls figure it’s not nice being the swing vote. Candice is worried about her future, since she’s at the bottom of both alliances. Cirie is surprised, because she’s not even close with Candice. She then floats her grudge against Amanda–how she chose Parvati back in Micronesia, costing her the win–and says that there are “common denominators” involved in their vote.

While all that’s happening, Russell catches a chicken for the Villains, trying to assert his supremacy over a rejuvenated Rob.

Everybody versus James: It’s a surprisingly transparent Tribal Council, but a nasty one, too. James lays his logic against Stephenie, and she fights back–as well as her entire alliance. Suddenly James is in the hot seat, for everything from being furious to using the term “y’all”. It just is nasty, and in Stephenie’s words, “unbelievable”. Colby was surprised that the one-team mindset quickly shifted to a dog-eat-dog one. Me, I saw that coming.

The votes went two ways: it’s either Stephenie (as James hoped) or Amanda (as Tom planned). It was a 3-3 tie before Jeff read two votes for Steph, effectively snuffing her out. It was 6-3, with both Cirie and Candice swinging against Tom. The vote didn’t end nicely, though:

Steph: “Next time y’all lose a challenge, stop cussing.”
James: “Keep your mouth shut.”
Tom: “Oh, c’mon.”

Oh c’mon, indeed. Next week, the Heroes go against James and his bullying ways. By all means, this means the Villains do have the upper hand.

Sugar Voted Off ‘Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains’

    Posted by: | Comments (0)

It was one for the Villains in the new season of “Survivor” when Jessica “Sugar” Kiper was voted out by 9 of her teammates. The former contestant of Gabon edition had to give up her second chance at winning the show when the Heroes chose her over Amanda Kimmel to leave first.

021210 0803 SugarVotedO1 Sugar Voted Off Survivor: Heroes Vs. Villains

In “Slay Everyone, Trust No One”, Sugar did not contribute well to the team during the Reward Challenge. It was a head to head race across various lanes marked in the sand. They had to dig a bag in the sand, run to the finish mat and repeat it three times. Sugar struggled through this and even got her bikini top ripped off.

Things were not any better for the 30-year-old in the Immunity Challenge. The tribes must assemble a puzzle boat using seven braces and paddle the boat to retrieve fire from a bonfire floating on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Then, they have to get back to the shore, use the braces as ladder and climb a platform to light the fire.

Sugar stumbled in the puzzle and cost Heroes its victory. ”Nobody really had a good night’s sleep because of her,” Colby Donaldson said at one point. Sugar later sobbed on the beach, saying she was “disappointed” at herself.

Next week, the remaining survivors will face an even more demanding physical challenge. Rob Mariano aka Boston Rob from the Villains tribe is seen in the preview being attended by doctor in the jungle and the medic could not rise him.

Amanda Kimmel is a player out for redemption this season. If you ask Amanda, she’s one of the most cunning players of all time. And how about it? She made the Final 3 both times she played. And remember, she was actually doing a lot of the decision making both times.

020710 0921 ExclusiveIn1 Exclusive Interview with Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains Amanda Kimmel

But fans might vividly remember the way Amanda fared in the Final 3. Remember? The jury said things like “I feel like I’m getting stupider just listening to you.” If Eliza rolled her eyes one more time they might have stuck like that.

Can Amanda shake her reputation as a doe-eyed, disingenuous beauty queen? And is it really fair to ask her to make the Final 3 yet again just to earn some darn respect around this place?

Perhaps trying to get a jump start on a season as a background character, Amanda didn’t talk much during our interview. I guess we’ll have to stay tuned to find out.

When did you develop your competitive spirit?

When I was a kid. I’ve always played sports and have been very competitive.

Who was the stronger player, Survivor: China winner Todd or Survivor: Micronesia winner Parvati?

They are both strong players or they wouldn’t have made it to the end. They just play really different.

Some viewers have teased you for failing to explain your game in front of the jury. Here’s another chance. How would you explain your success so far?

I would flat out say, “I’ve already been on the show twice and made it to the end both times. I don’t care who you are or what kind of game you play. To make it to the end twice is hard. I only made it because I’m good at Survivor.”

Prior to Heroes vs. Villains some players believed that a Micronesia alliance threatened to dominate the game. What’s your take on that?

Oh come on! I’m not an amateur here. You’ll have to wait and see what happens! :)
